Neil Armstrong

On this day in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. You can find out more about Neil Armstrong, and how he became an astronaut in my History Heroes book.

Did you know … he could fly an aeroplane before he could drive a car?

Take off to the Moon

51 years ago today at 2:32pm, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldren and Michael Collins made history by blasting off from the Kennedy Space Centre on their voyage to the moon.

Neil and Buzz landed on the moon on the 20th July at 20:16 in the Eagle Lunar Module - Michael stayed behind, orbiting the moon in the Columbia Command Module.

Neil Armstrong had dreamed about going to the moon and in 1969 he became the first man to step foot on its surface.
You can read all about Neil Armstrong and how he became an astronaut in my History Heroes Book - brilliantly illustrated by the wonderful Mike Philips.

Imagine how it would feel to be sitting in a rocket that was about to blast off to the moon... Perhaps you could write about how you would feel.

Think about what you would hear and see...

What would you be thinking as you heard the countdown?

What would it feel like as you took your first step on the moon?

Or how about Michael Collins? Imagine you are the one that is left in the Command Module as your friends go down to the moon. How would you feel about that?

On This Day In 1969...

The Apollo 11 space rocket was launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. On board, the three American astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were just setting out on their voyage of discovery to the Moon.

You can read all about it in my History Heroes book all about Neil Armstrong - published by Franklin Watts, and illustrated by the excellent Mike Phillips...

Today I'm busy working on a picture book story... but while I've been eating my lunch I've been making an animated gif of Neil Armstrong for my website's History Heroes section...

St Anne's RC Primary School - Coventry

Here's a BIG HELLO to everyone at St Anne's RC Primary School in Coventry... Looking forward to seeing you all in the morning.

Since I last wrote in my diary I've been busy, busy, busy - working on my History Heroes books. I've just finished the first draft of the 3rd book - all about Queen Elizabeth I, and I'm on with book 4 - Queen Victoria. The books are due to be published later this year so I'd better get a move on.
Last week I received a large envelope through the post containing the first completed roughs of the Columbus book... It's looking really good and I can't wait to see more.
